Commercial Herd

The Broken Bar M commercial herd is made up of Hereford, Red Simmentals, and Hereford/Simmental crosses. Over the last 30 years, we have worked to build and refine this herd so it produces high quality meat, as well as top quality bulls and cows.

Our main focus is building the end product-well-marbled, tender meat-before the calf is even conceived, but we also want our commercial bulls and females to perform well for our own ranch and for yours.

Our commercial bulls produce vigorous calves with modest birth weights, and they also do well in the pasture. The females of our commercial herd all have medium to large frame sizes. Confirmation wise, they are well put together. They are good boned, but not gangly. They have smooth lines and lots of eye appeal. Our commercial cows and heifers are also bred to be easy keepers. They adapt quickly and easily to changing weather conditions and seasons and to the different types of feed we offer. To top it all off, they are good mothers and good milkers.

We maintain good contact with the herd so it remains gentle and easy to handle, but we don't play nursemaid to the cows. We almost never pull calves--even from heifers. This is due in part to low birth weights, but also to strict culling standards. If a cow or heifer can't cut it in the pasture, she is culled from the herd. Our commercial herd is very low maintenance, which adds to the bottom line.
